International Baccalaureate®
Union Day School proudly offers the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme as an authorized IB World School. Our commitment to high-quality, international education prepares students to think critically, act responsibly, and grow into compassionate global citizens.
We currently offer an IB curriculum in grades 6th through 12th grade. Our students are asked to conduct open inquiry and real-life research both locally and globally in a constructivist-oriented approach. Teachers implement criteria-based assessment established by the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme and focus on the IB Learner Profile (a list of student qualities) as well as global contexts (a lens through which to view content). Our 8th graders also participate in the IB MYP Community Project, a culminating project for our 8th grade students and is a way to showcase their commitment to service and action.
IB Middle Years Programme (IB MYP)
Union Day School is an official school for the Middle Years Programme (MYP). We are authorized as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, and global education that Union Day School believes is important for our students to be competitive for higher education.
IB Diploma Programme (IB DP)
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) gives 11th and 12th grade students a rigorous, globally recognized curriculum that goes beyond standard high school coursework. Students develop critical thinking, research, and time management skills that prepare them for college level work from day one. Universities worldwide actively seek IB graduates, often offering advanced placement, college credits, and preferential admissions consideration. By choosing the IB DP, students don’t just earn a diploma, they gain a competitive edge in the college admissions process and arrive on campus ready to excel.
*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP).
Mission Statement
Union Day School’s community works together to provide students rigorous content and a rich curriculum that is parallel with the International Baccalaureate ideals of the learner profiles. Vision Statement
Union Day School's vision is to promote and foster thoughtful, caring, and creative students. They will be critical thinkers and problem solvers. Students will be confident, prepared for the future success and achieve their academic and social potential as life-long learners in the 21st Century. Global mindedness: We emphasize this as an understanding of how the world is organized and interconnected and the possibilities and constraints facing its people. Globally literate students analyze and think critically about the world and their roles in it. They become fluent investigators of the world, celebrating our diversity as global citizens.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is akin to the academic Olympics, offering a broad and challenging curriculum that surpasses traditional high school education.
The IB program is not solely about excelling in exams; it aims to develop well-rounded individuals prepared to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world.
Known for its rigorous academic standards, the IB program pushes intellectual boundaries and equips students with skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
Education in the IB program is not just about memorizing facts and figures. It adopts a holistic approach, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional, and social development. It’s about who you become throughout the journey, not just what you know.
IB Diploma courses are designed to provide an excellent foundation for further studies. Students who want to go into higher education or professional fields such as medicine, engineering, law, business management, nursing, teaching, and psychology benefit from these courses.
The IB Diploma Program offers students a unique educational experience because they can learn about themselves, others, and the world through rigorous academics, cultural immersion, and personal development. They also develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and creativity skills.
The IB diploma is well known internationally for its high-quality education, and many universities from around the world accept students who complete the IB program. The IB diploma is recognized worldwide, which means employers all over the globe will be impressed when they see your diploma.
Now, let's dive into the core components that make the IB Diploma Programme a unique and enriching experience.
1. Extended Essay (EE): The Deep Dive
Ever wanted to explore a topic you're truly passionate about in depth? The Extended Essay is your chance. It's like having your mini-research project, where you choose a subject of personal interest and dive into it, honing your research and writing skills. It's not just an essay; it's a testament to your ability to explore, analyze, and synthesize knowledge.
2. Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Where Philosophy Meets Real Life
TOK is like the brain gym of the IB Programme. It's a course that encourages you to question the nature of knowledge itself – how we know what we claim to know. It's not just about theories and abstract ideas; it's about applying critical thinking to real-world situations.
TOK challenges you to consider different perspectives, question assumptions, and develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of knowledge.
3. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Beyond the Classroom Walls
Education is not confined to textbooks and classrooms. CAS is all about stepping out into the world and engaging in activities that develop your creativity, physical well-being, and commitment to service.
Whether it's taking up a new hobby, participating in sports, or contributing to community service projects, CAS ensures that your education extends far beyond academic achievements.
1. It Impresses College Admission Officers
Colleges and universities view the IB Diploma as a hallmark of academic prowess. Why? Because it's not your run-of-the-mill high school curriculum. The IB is like a crucible, forging students with the intellectual mettle needed to tackle university-level coursework head-on.
It's a testament to your willingness to dive into the deep end of academia, where critical thinking, research skills, and a global perspective are not just valued but expected.
2. It Showcases Your Academic Fortitude
Let's talk about the IB Curriculum – the academic proving ground that demonstrates your ability to handle the big leagues of challenging material. It's not just about memorizing facts; it's about mastering concepts, applying knowledge, and developing a holistic understanding of your subjects.
Colleges and universities love the IB program and recognize its academic value. They're not just looking for students who can ace exams; they're seeking individuals who can navigate the complexities of diverse academic disciplines. The IB curriculum showcases your academic fortitude, setting you apart as a scholar ready to thrive in the dynamic landscape of higher education.
3. It Opens The Doors to College Credit
Now, let's get to the exciting part – those high scores on IB exams. They aren't just numbers; they're golden keys that can unlock doors to college credit at numerous universities. Picture this: your dedication to acing those challenging exams could translate into tangible benefits.
Many universities offer college credit, advanced standing, or even exemptions from certain general education requirements for stellar IB scores. It's like starting your university journey with a head start, equipped with the knowledge and academic achievement that make you stand out among your peers.
One of the standout features of the IB Diploma is its international perspective. The IB doesn't just teach subjects; it fosters a global mindset, encouraging students to think critically about global issues and appreciate diverse perspectives.
The IB Diploma’s international recognition is a golden key that unlocks doors to universities around the globe. Whether you fancy the historic halls of Europe, the innovation hubs of North America, or the vibrant landscapes of Asia, the IB Diploma is your global passport to academic success.
Admissions officers worldwide recognize and respect the rigorous nature of the IB curriculum. It's not just about acing exams; it's about demonstrating a level of academic commitment and resilience that transcends borders.
So whether you're aiming for the ancient traditions of Oxford or the cutting-edge institutions of Singapore, the IB Diploma is a universal language that speaks volumes to admissions committees worldwide.
Embarking on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma journey is a decision that hinges on your academic aspirations and personal growth goals. Ask yourself, do you yearn for more than just textbook knowledge? The IB Diploma isn't just a qualification; it's a commitment to a holistic and globally-minded education.
If you're aiming to study abroad at a top university, and if you’re passionate about delving into subjects with an international perspective, mastering challenging material, and developing critical thinking skills, the IB Diploma might be your academic match.
